The Choctawhatchee Audubon Society is a chapter of the National Audubon Society and
is a Non-Profit, Volunteer Organization Serving Okaloosa and Walton Counties since 1976
|
| CONSERVATION |
Our chapter acts on important local, state-wide, and national environmental issues by attending public hearings and writing letters to our elected and appointed officials. Each newsletter contains a "Conservation Corner" alerting members on environmental issues. In addition, concerned citizens can join Audubon e-mail lists which recap environmental legislative action at state and national levels and provide suggestions for action.

| EDUCATION |
CAS has created a traveling "Birding Box" which is available to local educators by request. The birding box is free and contains 25 binoculars, various field guides, curriculum guides, audio CD’s and classroom activity suggestions. Experienced birders will hand deliver the box and accompany students on birding trips when requested. To request these education materials, Click Here.
CAS and Nonie’s Ark Animal Encounters has teamed up to provide families the opportunity to discover the sights and sounds of nature at night! Free hour-long guided night walks are offered on the first Friday night of most months; please check the calendar for times and locations. All are invited but focus is on ages 4-10.
CAS sponsors requesting fifth grade classes in Okaloosa and Walton counties for the Audubon Adventures Nature Study Program. The program addresses four different topics, each of which comes with a teacher's guide, video, poster, and certificate as well as 30 Audubon Adventures newsletters for the students.
To enhance environmental studies, our chapter has placed a copy of National Audubon's Almanac of the Environment: The Ecology of Everyday Life in the media center of local middle and high schools.

| RECREATION |
CAS hosts a number of outings each year. These include at least eight Beginners' Birdwalks, four field trips, Fall and Spring Migratory Bird Counts, a Christmas Bird Count, and a spring chapter retreat. Each year, special projects provide a chance to get outdoors and give back to the community at the same time. Last year CAS volunteers monitored rooftop Least Tern nests and conducted a marine debris survey on Eglin AFB beaches. The Choctawhatchee Tern Team will resume nest monitoring operations in March.
